AM Reception Reports

Welcome to the Outreach Gold AM Reception Reports page!

There is something special about receiving an AM radio signal from a distant transmitter. Whether you’re listening on a traditional radio, experimenting with a home-built receiver, or using more advanced radio equipment, AM (Amplitude Modulation) broadcasting offers a fascinating insight into the world of radio communications.

We welcome reception reports from listeners and radio enthusiasts across the UK and around the world. Whether you’re a newcomer taking your first steps into radio listening or an experienced radio amateur interested in propagation and signal conditions, we’d love to hear about your listening experiences!

Understanding AM Signal Propagation

One of the most interesting aspects of AM broadcasting is the way radio signals travel over different distances, depending on the frequency, time of day, and atmospheric conditions.

During daylight hours, medium-wave AM signals are generally received over relatively local and regional distances, as the ionosphere absorbs much of the skywave signal. After dark, however, conditions can change dramatically. Reduced ionospheric absorption allows signals to travel much further by reflecting and refracting through the ionosphere, sometimes enabling reception hundreds or even thousands of miles from the transmitter.

This phenomenon, known as skywave propagation, is one of the reasons AM listening can be so rewarding. A station that is difficult to hear during the day may become surprisingly clear after sunset, while signals from distant countries can sometimes appear on the dial.

Reception conditions are constantly changing, influenced by the time of day, season, solar activity, atmospheric noise, local interference, and the equipment being used. Every reception report helps build a picture of how our signals are travelling and where they can be heard.

Send Us Your AM Reception Report

We would love to know where and how you are receiving Outreach Gold!

If you tune in to our AM broadcasts, please get in touch and tell us about your reception. Your report doesn’t need to be technical or complicated. Even a few simple details about your listening experience are valuable.

Where possible, please include:
– Your location: Town, region & country.
– Date & Time: When you heard us, preferably in UTC.
– Frequency: The frequency on which you received our broadcast.
– Reception Wuality: Was the signal strong and clear, weak, fading, or affected by interference?
– Your Wquipment: The radio, receiver, antenna, or aerial you used.
– Additional Observations: Interesting details about the signal, propagation, or listening experience.

Don’t worry if you are new to radio listening and are unfamiliar with technical terminology. A simple description of what you heard and where you were listening is absolutely fine. Experienced listeners are equally welcome to provide more detailed observations about signal strength, fading, interference, and propagation conditions.

Electronic QSL Cards

We appreciate everyone who takes the time to send us a reception report. As a thank-you, Outreach Gold offers electronic QSL cards (e-QSLs) to acknowledge reception reports.

A QSL card is a traditional way for radio listeners and operators to confirm that a transmission has been received. In the past, these cards were commonly exchanged through the postal service. Today, electronic QSL cards provide a convenient digital alternative that can be saved, displayed, or added to your radio listening collection.

Whether this is your very first reception report or one of many you have submitted over the years, we are pleased to hear from you and share in your interest in radio.
